Surprise, Surprise, Surprise!CMA Music Festival - Stadium show draws 40,000
from PETER COOPER, BRAD SCHMITT, The Tennessean Staff Writers
The sun set, military planes flew over newly christened LP Field, and the first of the CMA Music Festival's four stadium concerts began with a harmony-filled performance from Little Big Town. "Anybody out there proud of where they're from?" shouted Little Big Town's Jimi Westbrook, and many in the crowd of more than 40,000 shouted back. Some were from Nashville, most were from points elsewhere, and all were there at what used to be the Coliseum to hear a generous sampling of country music.
After Westbrook's informal survey, Little Big Town then launched into "Boondocks," the first hit of a night that went on to include sets from rowdy Hank Williams Jr., superstar duo Brooks & Dunn and Southern Rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Sara Evans, Blake Shelton, Gary Allan and Pat Green also performed, as did Dierks Bentley, whose unannounced set was the evening's surprise until Brooks & Dunn brought SOMEONE out to play acoustic guitar on the Academy of Country Music song of the year, "Believe." Each time the video screen showed SOMEONE, thousands of shrieks erupted.
