The W.O. Smith Music School has been called one of the best programs in Music City, giving underprivileged students music lessons for just a couple of quarters each.

The school has operated in two small buildings in the Edgehill neighborhood, but has outgrown the space and will soon be able to move into a much bigger space on 8th Avenue. Tuesday saw the groundbreaking of the new facility.

Mayor Bill Purcell and country superstar Keith Urban performed ceremonial demolition to bring down the old and start moving toward the new.

"It's more kids who otherwise would never have this opportunity and frankly, it just turns everything around for them," Purcell said.

Urban has been involved with the school for several years.

"A school like this gives so many children the opportunity to realize those dreams and may even dreams you haven't thought of, that's the beauty of music," Urban said.

In the last 23 years, the organization has taught children like LaNei Spight to play music. For Spight, learning how to play the piano was a dream come true.

"I really want to learn piano lessons because my aunt used to play piano, and it made me want to play piano because I wanted to be like her when I was little," Spight said. "I met a lot of teachers and they helped me along the way while I was leaning piano lessons."

One such teacher was Kirstin Anderson, who later went on to teach in Harlem.

"This is where it began -- not just with music -- the fact that I'm teaching what I studied here, but the idea of having a community outside of school and your home that a lot of kids really need," Anderson said.

About 400 Metro students receive music lessons at the school each week for just 50 cents each. They cram into small rooms packed with instruments. The bathroom even doubles as guitar storage.

"This has been a great facility for us for so long, for 23 years since 1984, but we've simply outgrown it and quite frankly it's just not adequate for our current needs," W.O. Smith Executive Director Jonah Rabinowitz said.

The new facility should take about a year to complete. Most of the old tire store will be converted into the new school, but there will be some new construction. The school received a $1 million donation from Bank of America, but the school will need a total of $6 million to pay for construction.

When this new school opens, W.O. Smith will be able to double its current enrollment.
